Switch Cards

It has been brought to my attention by some friends of ours (that are shooting to move to Sierra Leone in 2013) that the banks are promising to introduce "Switch Cards" which are the term the British use for debit cards.  Read an article about it here!

It doesn't sound like it'll happen till October 2012 but it sure is a step in the right direction for development in Sierra Leone.

Picture Post from Parker

Here are some pictures with Grandma Campbell, Auntie Melissa, and Cousin Joshua.  We will miss them dearly in Sierra Leone but hopefully we will talk over Skype often...

"Hi mom!"

"Let me help you, you've got stuff all over your face dear cousin."

He doesn't quit know how to feel about his mommy holding another baby!

The stare down!

Love you grandma!

Aden's 2 month update

Aden turned 2 months old on Sunday.  Here is a little update on his progress...

Height: 22 3/4 inches (80th percentile)
Weight: 12 lbs 6 oz (58th percentile)
Head circumference: 50th percentile

For the 2nd month...

Feeding: He is still feeding on a 2.5 to 3 hour schedule.  We still have to try and encourage him to eat.  He is like his dad and will eat till he is perfectly full, and not an ounce more.  If we let him, he'd eat for 5-10 minutes instead of the recommended 20-45 minutes. The doctor said he's eating enough all together but not enough at each feeding to sleep longer stretches at night.  He said he has to be eating 5-6 oz at each feeding to make it longer than 3-4 hours. (He's only eating 3-4 oz)

Sleeping: Like I said, still waking up 3-4 hours at night for all of the 2nd month.  However... a preview for the 3rd month... the night of his 2nd month and every night since for 3 nights he's slept for 6 to 6.5 hours for me! yay! Last night he woke up after almost 4, but I think its because he came out of his swaddle.

Milestones: Aden LOVES to stand up on his feet.  He can definitely support his own weight, he just has a bit of a balance issue. :)  The Dr. said he has great head control... what they expect to see in a 3-4 month old.  He loves it when we kick his feet for him and when I tickle his face with my hair.  We are totally enamored with his smile!

Schedule: It definitely took some work to get Aden on a schedule and we're not perfect at it, nor do we follow it hard and fast, but it definitely has its benefits. Every 3 hours, Aden sleeps at least half of it. Occasionally he wakes up early... about 45 minutes into it (known as the 45 minute intruder in babywise). I'll pick him up, put his pacifier back in, hold him for a couple minutes, and usually he goes back down pretty easily. When he doesn't go down easily, its usually because he's hungry and then I obviously feed him.

Parenting Stuff: We are following Growing Kids God's Way principles (the secular version is Babywise) as well as mixing in some Baby Whisperer and Happiest Baby on the Block principles.

Cloth Diapering: Its going really well.  We are using mainly prefolds and covers right now.  It was a bit of a learning curve for us, especially John.  However, once we got the hang of them, we LOVE them.  They really aren't that much extra work... maybe 2-3 loads of laundry a week and an extra 10-15 seconds max per diaper change.  At night we use Kawaii Heavy Wetters.  They are a pocket diaper with 2 inserts.  The inserts absorb all the moisture and the fleece pocket that holds the inserts keeps the moisture away from his skin.  When we are at home, we also use cloth wipes.  I mix about 2 cups of water with a few squirts of burt's bees baby oil and a few drops of tea tree oil.  I then mix the water mixture up with my finger and then put my cloth wipes in to absorb.  Its easy, fast, and cheap.

Our Trip to Greer over Labor Day

I'm a few weeks late in posting this, but we took a trip to Greer with my parents and my brother and his family.  We had a great time!

New Camera

John and I left for Sierra before my birthday and were gone for Christmas.  My parents had set us aside some money for gifts when we returned.  What did we buy you may ask?

A fancy schmancy Canon camera off craigslist.  John and I know literally NOTHING about photography but decided it is something we can learn and do together while in Sierra Leone.  We both don't have a hobby that we really like doing together... I like to run, exercise, cook, and garden.  He likes to play sports like ultimate frisbee, tennis, and soccer, and garden and hunt.  We both garden... but we do it differently.  John likes to plant and spend time out in the garden.  I like to harvest and use the fruits of his labor ;)  We are excited to dive into something that is new to us both.

Here are a few pictures of Aden while I was playing with a few different settings (thanks to a brief tutorial from my cousin Stephen).

I told John the other day that other than choosing to follow my Lord, marrying him was the best think I've ever done, but giving birth to this boy is the coolest think I've ever done!
